拍品描述
Far East, Japan, Edo to Meiji period, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. A finely carved boxwood netsuke depicting a central figure donning a foo dog or lion dog mask and costume, flanked by two attendants, one playing a flute, the other playing a drum. Foo dogs or Komainu in Japanese are typically paired statues of lion-like creatures - one with an open mouth as we see in this example, the other with a closed mouth - that serve as guards protecting the entrance or the inner shrine of a Shinto shrine. According to scholars, the open mouth is said to be uttering the first letter of the Sanskrit alphabet (pronounced "a") while the closed one is pronouncing the last latter ("um"). Together Aum, signifying the beginning and end of all things, is a sound sacred to various religions including Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism. Japanese Komainu originated in the Chinese Tang dynasty and are believed to ward off evil spirits. A brilliant example replete with superb artistry and strong symbolism. Perforations for suspension. Size: 1.375" W x 1.5" H (3.5 cm x 3.8 cm)

The traditional kimono had no pockets. While women could tuck away small personal items in their sleeves, men suspended their treasured possessions (tobacco pouches, pipes, purses or writing implements and the like) called sagemono on a silk cord, hanging from their obi (sash). In order to stop the cord from slipping through the obi, a small toggle called a netsuke was attached.
