拍品描述
Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden offering bowl, perhaps a kola nut container, in the form of a bunny, from the Yoruba people of Nigeria, adorned with red and white natural pigments. The lid is hand carved in the form of a rabbit with a sweet face, long ears and a short tail, while the lower part of the container is carved with the rabbits' legs and feet on the underside. The interior of the container is divided, so that there are two compartments inside. The surface shows remains of natural red pigment, particularly on the ears and lower section, as well as white highlights on the bunny's chest as well as around the pupils of his eyes. A sweet piece most likely representing the Bunyoro rabbit or savanna hare native to Africa! Size: 14.25" L x 6" W x 6.5" H (36.2 cm x 15.2 cm x 16.5 cm).

Provenance: Estate of Paul & Louise Bernheimer
