19th C. Thai Bronze Seated Buddha, Lanna Style

拍品描述: Thailand, ca. 1890 CE. This is a large lacquered and gold-leafed bronze statue of a seated Buddha. The statue is in the Lanna (or Chiang Saen) style, which was influenced by the styles of the Khmer, Sukhothai, India, Burma, and Sri Lanka. Buddha images of this style typically feature a lotus bud or orb shaped finial and large hair curls. Their torso is plump, with a slim waist line; their face is round and smiling, with high curving highbrows. Buddhas are always depicted in different mudras, or poses, that represent historical moments in the Buddha's life, forms of meditation, or a symbolic combination of both. This Buddha is depicted in the Bhumisparsha mudra, with his right hand over the right knee reaching towards the ground and the palm inward and touching the lotus throne. His left hand lies in his lap with the palm upright. This mudra represents the moment of his awakening, as he defeated the demon Mara, and claimed the earth as his witness to his enlightenment. The details on this piece are particularly fine. Size: 29-1/4" H x 16" W x 10-1/4" L (74 cm x 41 cm x 26 cm). IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to size, crating will be required. Please inquire about shipping.
