wood, brocade, color painting on wood. Japan, 19th cent.
Unusual, impressive and attractive composition – a large picture with bright white chrysanthemums (kiku) in front of a gold-brown background, very noble with frame in black lacquer. The color effects are noteworthy –the juicy green of leaves, snow-white blossoms, gold dust partially scattered over a large rust-brown area. Also worth mentioning is the under ground of the painting – it is composed of a fine vertically ribbed veneer! In front of the lush kiku is a fence not defining a clear border above, but artistically flowing into the heaven-bound flourishing floristic. A bird flutters by in the rather empty picture segment on the right, blue with a white breast, feathers executed in great detail. The brocade-like field all around is warm yellow-brown with fine golden vines. The lowest small field over the entire width is also painting on wood with the depiction of a row of trees with thick green crowns. The solid framing is rounded on the upper corners and retracted, the two legs even on the lower corners are massively crafted, curved-tiered and placed across the picture direction. On back brocade with abstract floral design.
