Porcelain with blue-white painting. Japan, 19th cent.
Very effective composition from Arita! On back of each is the large central motif of a peony blossom (Botan), considered to be the queen of all flowers. Stylized flowers are painted in fourteen fields all around, surrounded by more or less symmetrically ordered generous foliage. The small fields between are each adorned with abstract floral design. On the bottom a similar floral order is demonstrated, although reduced, a seal mark on both.
