Painting on silk, lacquer, wood. China, late Qing, dated 1900 resp. 1897
Dedicated to Victor Wickerhauser in Beijing Very rare unique piece of a round fan with a silk and inscription of the last empress of China, Cixi 慈 禧 (1835 - 1908), generally known as " Empress Widow " - Huangtaihou 皇 太 后 . The picture is still in the original frame, from the original owner in handwriting inscribed and dated. The fan has a delicate, feminine, black lacquer frame with handle. The silk painting presents a lavish peony, foliage and two other small flowers. Four different large red seals as well as inscription with black ink. The large royal seal is situated above center ( see also the second note below). The larger horizontal characters, read from right to left, mean "look forward to luck, prosperity and a long life", Da fu gui yi shou kao 大 富 貴 黳 亦 壽 考 . Under glass is the following handwritten notice in German. The Chinese characters say: "These flowers were painted in summer 3 years ago by the Empress Widow. Dedication: "The greatest luck is wealth and long life". Peking, 23. IX. 1900. Vic. Wickerhauser". Various animals are carved all around the carved wood frame, in front below is a shield with the inscription "PEKIN 1900". On a long little sack hanging on a silk cord (behind glass), the inscription Shang chong li 賞 崇 禮 , "I promise you my great respect". The very subtly crafted silk painting has some damage due to age in upper area.
