Bronze, silver. Japan, Meiji (1868-1912)
A prestigious vase with extraordinarily elaborate craftsmanship. The piece appears more as a sculpture and is rendered in five parts. The vase itself has a strongly squashed body and a high, upwardly swinging neck and is divided into twelve sections running vertically throughout. These are slightly concave and border each other interchangeably at a rib or groove. The mouth is respectively lapped and flared pointedly or drawn in. Very intriguing is the three-dimensionally rendered rock, cast from a slightly greyer alloy, which appears as a wave, possibly even a dragon. On it is a heavy falcon with silvered legs. The feather work is entirely hand crafted. Furthermore, two plum branches with applied flowers and buds, on the rock. The characters on the bottom are unusual; two are large with a small inscription beside. The large characters are inlaid with silver and read Ju 壽 ?long life“ and Fuku 褔 ?luck, prosperity“. The inscription on the side is not readable due to patina and dirt. Overall very good condition and an extraordinary piece!
