Yellow-grey stone. China, Northern Wei dynasty (386 – 534)
Despite the stone’s exposure to weathering, the fine facial features remain entirely preserved and allow us to recognize the distinctive elements of the Wei style, precursor to the Sui dynasty (followed by the Tang). The full round face reflects the inner withdrawal and projects the positive disposition of a bodhisattva. No further nominal attribution can be made here, as the head is the only surviving component. The bodhisattva wears a crown-like diadem with floral elements, a large decorative element to the effect of an emblem at the front, presumably a stylised flaming pearl in front of a sun disc. 灰石雕菩薩頭. 中國, 北魏代. 高 18.3 厘米.
HEIGHT 18,3 CM
From an Austrian private collection acquired around 1970 from the collection of Beowulf Klebert
