Painting on paper. Japan, 1st half 19th cent.
The depiction of kamakiri in a very subtle realism and with this unique integration of precision and fine humor. The green insect, in the West called “praying mantis“, while it is in Japan a symbol of fighting spirit, here in a posture depicted that reminds us of “prancing horses“, so it could also suggest a performance of Lippizaner horses. Delicate limbs and head facing us with yellow curious eyes. Widely swinging antennae, otherwise the picture field is empty. The powerful black signature SUZU-KI KI-ITSU 鈐 木 其 一 , and red seal. Mounted on a sturdy sheet with silver-nashiji. Kiitsu was the last of three major masters of the Rimpa School.
