Glazed ceramic. Cambodia, Kingdom of the Khmer, ca. 12th to 13th cent.
A rare and large 800 year old vase, in great condition. The form accentuates the shoulders; a short, curved neck and outspreading lip. Flat concise base, above it a ribbed section and two borders with circulating waved lines. The largely conical body is flat; the circulating, waved line patterns begin to emerge where the shoulder section commences. The glaze covers the mouth on the inside, as well as the whole of the vase on the outside, except for the base area. Subtle tile-design and craquele. The drawn element is darker (almost black-brown) and emphasized. There is some weathering due to old age on some of the exposed areas, a tiny restored notch – otherwise in very good condition.

From the collection Dr. Rudolf Leopold, Vienna, before that, in the collection Beowulf K. Klebert, Vienna; the vessel was bought from the researcher Roxanna M. Brown.
