Agate. China, Qing dynasty 19th cent.
Very rare little bottle with delicate craftsmanship as well as a puzzling depiction. Small ovoid form, mineral with unusual grain and different colored enclaves, figurative carving. The basis mineral is strongly milky in a web-like pattern, chaotic and spirited! Three figures in relief, all in different colors. On the main side is a crowned, seated, nearly glass-clear character with masculine features framed by a yellow-red flaming polished band similar to a halo. On the back, a completely yellow-red figure with monkey-like (?) face and stick behind his back, as well as clothing and cap. Possibly the wise and magical monkey which accompanied Xuanzang on his famous India journey in the 7th century, while he then would have been portrayed on the front side. The third, smallest, greenish figure also has an animal head, presumably a further companion of Xuanzang who brought at that time more than 500 Buddhist scripts to China and translated them. In the foot area are three round elements, either long life peaches or the Buddhist triratna, maybe also a play on the Buddh. "three basket" tripitaka, since Xuanzang was also know by this name. Within the oval ring base is also a depiction - green and possibly a (?) dragon head. Beautiful blue-green closure on a black plate, very precisely crafted ivory spoon.
