Netsuke, ebony wood. Japan, 19th cent.
A shrine leaning against a rock, with Shinto-figures inside. Pine trees growing around the rock, three visitors on an arched bridge and two more beneath the trees. The ensemble is standing on a rocky plinth with a flat underside and himotoshi. Also on it, the signature SHO-ZAN, presumably a carver from the Horaku circle, whose style is reflected in this work. Very well preserved.
