Fire-gilded bronze. Sino-Tibetan, Qing Dynasty, early 19th century
Very good rendition and a richly gilded sculpture of Buddha. He is sitting in padmasana (lotus seat) on a lotus pedestal and forming the dharmacakra mudra with both hands, the gesture symbolising the “turning of the wheel of dharma”, or preaching. This, however, did not occur in front of a large audience, but rather by Buddha revealing the “four truths” to his four companions, therewith establishing the Buddhist monastic order. Buddha’s facial expression is hence content, which is strongly emphasised. Fine floral pattern on the clothing seams, high ushnisha with lotus bud. The entirely cast parts (hands, one arm, the head) are original and as commonly found, applied. Bottom plate with vishvavajra and yinyang symbol.
