Ink on paper. Japan, 19th cent.
The theme of this caricature is unclear. At first glance, one could say that it is the seven lucky gods. After all, the lucky god Fukurokuju is throned on top of the massive bell, suspending a gourd (hyotan) containing the elixier of life from his hand by a string. The claw-footed devil beating the drum, as well we the man with the skull-like head and the cobold climbing on the bell, however, are anything but lucky gods. It’s safe to say the place is being haunted, and the couple on the left are not hesitant to make a quick and unnoticed departure. An amusing, unformal and vivid depiction with plenty of witty details if observed closely.
