Netsuke, maritime ivory. Japan, around mid-19th cent.
Unbelievable miniature work in the twelve animals of the zodiac, all three-dimensional in this extremely compact composition in a circle placed on an irregularly contoured oval plate. Not to be overseen on one side is the ox with the rat on his back. The story behind this is that the rat was in deep mourning after Buddha’s death and thus jumped in front of the ox. So he became number one in the zodiac. According to the hierarchy left from the ox to tiger, hare, dragon, to the snake on the ground, above it horse and monkey. Then the goat mounted by the rooster, the dog in front of him and lastly the boar. Himotoshi on the flat bottom as well as the finely incised signature SHUN-KO-SAI 春 光 齋.
