拍品描述
Jade. China, Eastern Zhou, late Spring and Autumn period, 6th-5th century BC Pendants in the shape of dragons were common ornaments carved in jade during the Eastern Zhou period. Although the pendants can assume a variety of shapes, the rendering of the body of the mythical animal follows basically two main schemes: in the first, the animal is represented as stretched, as in nos.88 and 94, while in the second the body is rendered in a more compressed form, as illustrated by no.93 and the present example. On this pendant, the body of the dragon, represented in profile, is tightly compressed in a kind of s-shaped pattern. The rear limbs are also twisted, as indicated by the different orientation of the front and rear paws, and the tail terminates in a curl. The surface decoration, carved in low relief, is rather complex and the two sides of the object, though very similar, are not completely identical. The body of the dragon is covered by small, fat curls in various forms –comma-like, c- and s-shaped. Additional dragon heads in profile, recognizable by virtue of small circles carved in the jade which stand for the animal eyes, are interspersed among the curls: these dragons’ heads are of the same type as those visible on pendants nos.88 and 89. The sinuous dragon is further decorated with long, striated bands which stress the three bends of the animal’s body: this same pattern is used to highlight other parts of the animal, such as the tip of the tail, and the ear and snout of the dragon. The pendant is pierced with two suspension holes, one located in the mouth and the other at the top centre. There are also five additional cut-outs which probably have a purely ornamental function. However, it is also possible that the perforation in the tail area was used as an extra suspension hole. In fact, if the dragon was suspended via the central, top perforation, more jades could be hung from the two holes pierced at the extremities of the pendant. The jade has no translucency and is whitish in colour, probably as a consequence of natural alterations. 玉龍穀紋形佩 - 東周, 春秋晚期, 公元前6世紀-前5世紀All archaic jades expertized by Univ.
