Jade. China, Eastern Zhou Dynasty, 4th to 3rd cent. BC
An unusual large “pearl“ from the stately necklace of an aristocrat from the dynasty indicated. The decor on the exterior is entirely designed in semi-plastic spirals, die smooth ends are lightly angular-conical, in the center divided as with a band suggesting rotation. The head surfaces are smooth. Astounding is the small vertical eyelet tunnel, as are the spirals - a laborious (and costly) work. Outside, due to ageing, the jade shows predominantly opaque white-yellow to a very delicate greenish tone, in focused backlighting red-yellow. Some corrosive influence on one area, otherwise very good preservation. 玉管 - 东周, 公元前4世纪-前3世纪 长 10,6 厘米; 宽 2,6 厘米
HEIGHT 10,6 CM; DIAMETER 2,6 CM
From an Austrian-Hungarian collection
Accompanying this jade, is an expertise by Univ. Prof. Dr. Filippo Salviati. Also from him, is the following information about comparative examples from publicized excavations or offered from specialist literature: A similar bead measuring half the size of the present one is in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, Avery Brundage collection: see the exhibition catalogue He Li and others, Jade chinois, pierres d’immortalité, Paris 1997, no. 42. As in the present Lot, the Avery Brundage bead displays the same decoration of small raised and regularly spaced curls, though it lacks the middle striated band.
