Jade. China, Qing, 19th century
This is a powerful and expressive piece; attractive and very rare. The mineral has vibrant red and dark greyish-white patterning. The snout curls inwards and the tooth is sharper than any tiger’s. The legs have been dreamt up from some fantasy creature, the tail borrowed from a bird. In the ancient design of a “C” shape the horn curls backwards and there is a serrated flange along the back further defining the mythical animal’s supernatural origins.Expertise and age determination: Univ.
