Gouache-colours on fabric. China, late Qing, approx. about 1900
A strictly hierarchically arranged ancestral image in strong colours. Above, man and woman, both with a civil Mandarin emblem. The woman with pearl strings on the head decoration. Four other persons sitting beneath; one of the females is somewhat older. Likewise, they are all of royal descent and clothed respectively noble. All of the men with moustache. In the background, paintings with rocky mountain ranges and pine trees, peaches in bowls on a table in front – all symbols of longevity. Very finely drawn portrait-like faces, all still and laughing, only the spouse of the Mandarin is somewhat distanced. Frame with blossom-curtain and a broad meander on the bottom. Original composed of two widths (central seam), only painted afterwards. Good condition, lacquer seal on the back.
