Netsuke, marine ivory. Japan, 19th century
Contrary to the other plate-formed netsuke, this piece has a central drilled opening with a loop. The depiction on the front between two incised lines shows a man with eboshi on his head sitting on a cushion in a boat. A willow is hanging into the picture. Presumably the famous Tang poet Li Taibe (in Japan Rihaku) is portrayed. Various designs on the reverse.
