Netsuke, ebony and ivory. Japan, 19th cent.
"Dutchmen" are a popular netsuke motif, going back to the time when these Orandajin were the only Europeans at the time of closure in Nagasaki who were allowed to operate in certain trade areas there. The depiction offers interesting strong contrasts - black ebony and only the trumpet and shoes are of ivory. The Dutchman is wearing spats and a small child crawls on his shoulder, the man speaks to him, maybe he should be quiet ... himotoshi in buttocks.
