Netsuke, ivory. Japan, late 19th cent.
Scenically good, finely worked depiction! The sculptor seated on a mat holds his tools and has a moveable head. The head′s movement gives the impression that the artist observes his work in a very critical way. The large head is of a Nio, the big athletic guardians of temple gates, always showing an especially grim expression. Very fine clothing decoration, staining, himotoshi below, pearl-bordered signature GYOKU-ICHI 玉 一 on neck of Nio.
