Bronze. India, 18th to 19th cent.
Very detailed bronze figurine of Lakshmi. She is standing with crossed legs (padasvastika) on a lotus plinth surmounting a quadratic plate. Lakshmi is the consort of Vishnu, although her embodiment as “the great mother-goddess” Mahalakshmi reaches beyond this role and can even incorporate other goddesses such as Parvati, Druga, Bhumidevi, etc… Her attribute in this bronze is a lotus flower, in the other hand is an eyelet where another object could have formerly been present (a lamp? In this case, it would be a Dipalakshmi depiction). Clothing with creases as well as jewellery and decorative bands and chains protruding outwards. Budged breasts, vivid facial features, and a long queue of hair with floral decorations on the back.
