Boxwood.. Japan, Meiji period
An okimono depicting a boat on a large wave with a full sail. The boat has a fierce dragon head at the prow and is densely occupied by the Shichi Fukujin, Japan’s seven lucky gods. Bishamon is standing at the front with a pagoda in one hand, left of him the god of longevity and prosperity Fukurokuju with an elongated head, rod and beard. Right of him, another god of prosperity Daikoku with his mallet. Continuing around, the well-known, large-bellied and always smiling Hotei. Kneeling at the rear, Ebisu, patron of fishermen, who held a fishing rod (missing). Next to him, the only goddess, Benten, playing her lute. Finally, Jurojin, god of wisdom. Below the stretched sail, Takaramono, the treasures of the lucky gods. The ship is called Takarabune (treasure ship). A signature in ivory at the bottom, KO-ICHI.
