Red stone. India, Mathura, approx. 2nd to 3rd cent.
A very early stele from Mathura, as seldom to be found in the art market. The nearly nude figure of a dancing yakshini is under a tiered protruding epistyle. Yakshini are fertility spirits and were very popular in depictions. The masculine form, yakshas, composed the circle around the fold of wealth Kubera, guardian of treasures. Left from yakshini′s head is presumably a lotus blossom, necklace around her throat and round breasts. This rare portrayal shows flaws due to age, spots on stone due to weathering, as characteristic for the stone sculptures from Mathura. Black wooden base.
