Yellow bronze. Burma, Shan, approx. 17th cent.
In this rare, early and exceptionally preserved Shan-bronze, Buddha is seated in padmasana (lotus seat) on a round and flared pedestal, symbolically touching the ground to signalise his victory over Mara (Maravijaya) shortly before his enlightenment. High arched eyebrows and downcast meditative gaze. The eight-jagged crown suggest the “universal ruler”, the spiritual concept of the eightfold path to enlightenment of Buddhist teachings. Firm elongated lotus bud as well as decorative flanges on the sides, typical for the Shan style. Strong patina due to age.
