Red sandstone. India, Madhyapradesh or Rajasthan, approx. 11th to 12th cent.
A large and impressive sculpture of four-armed god Shiva, standing in slight tribhanga, one foot facing outwards. The iconography is not entirely clear, as several parts of the depiction are missing. The rod held frontally was quite certainly a trident and the water vessel held in the hand below suggest that this was once a portrayal of Shiva with the river goddess Ganga (who could possibly have been present as a small depiction on the upper left). Shiva prevented a flood, but at the same time became subdued by the erotic emanation of Ganga and compelled his consort Parvati to jealousy. The sculpture shows Shiva with fine facial features, a tall crown (holding a symbolic third-eye), bejewelled with chains and clad in a fine silk dhoti. On the bottom right an animal (gazelle?) is licking a water container. Mounted on a wooden base.
HEIGHT (WITHOUT BASE) 65,3 CM
