Red sandstone. India, Chandella, 11th to 12th cent.
A rare temple stele presenting Shiva crowned and in light tribhanga standing on a base. He is four-armed, two arms are completely preserved, the fragment of an attribute - presumably a trident – is held high. In very good condition is the head of Vishnu in his youthful-masculine expression. Jewelry on the ears and chest. At his feet on the base is a reclining animal depicted, showing a powerful chest and head (fragment) which suggest the white bull Nandi, his customary companion animal. The background is a rectangular plate, the base is newly tiered toward the bottom.
