Netsuke, horn. Japan, 18th cent.
Good, old, compactly worked netsuke with the at that time beloved "Dutchman" theme. These were the only Europeans who were allowed to operate a trade base in the port of Nagasaki - in the Western region. Back then, the fashionable allonge wigs were found to be especially odd in Japan. Particular in the depiction is that the man is wearing Chinese robes (the larger Chin. colony was also in Nagasaki), also the boy on his shoulder. This is all done in the manner of the boy of Hotei (god of luck). The Dutchman holds a long brass instrument in one hand. Strong age patina, himotoshi in buttocks.
