Sandstone. Old Khmer Empire, Bayon, approx. 12th cent.
A meaningful Khmer sculpture from the zenith of the classical art period in Bayon. High quality compact sandstone with fine surface, very well-worked and beautiful aged color. The depiction presents the straight standing four-armed sculpture of the high god Vishnu, carrying a folded sambat. These are called the "Sustainer", a manifestation of benevolent grace. In the old Khmer Empire (and also many other lands), rulers like to identify themselves with this god of the trinity Brahma-Vishnu-Shiva. The upper torso is bare and youthful, right the two upper arms are preserved, left only the begin of arm, thus no attribute. The face is strictly frontal and offers clear masculine dominant features. The work on hair in temple area is very fine. The crown with relief decor is according to the Bayon time stylistically typical, on head is a cone-shaped elevation with relief. Sambat displays typical traits with fishtail quills centered over the belt forwards hanging piece. On back, a decorative swinging ornament. Feet missing, some damage to edges, such as earlobes, crown etc., the original head was broken off and replaced, absolute fitting. Mounted on a tiered black base.
