Yellow bronze. India, Bastar, 19th cent.
This Bastar bronze appears ancient and is very well modeled. The round openwork base curves outwards, while the torso does not take the commonly found triangular shape. The chest is without a doubt feminine. Rings decorate the arms and legs. The attributes are Mayurapattra (feather bush) with four spirals, as well as a Khappar and Muth (stick, symbol of honor). Notable is the large head with large eye, a comparatively small mouth and a third eye between the eyebrows, which could signalize a connection to Shiva. Hence, the depiction is most likely a Danteshvari, a form of Druga - spouse of Shiva. Good patina. Bronzes from indigenous Bastar tribes were always cult-related, and crafted by specialized bronze-founders who travelled the land. The Baster region lies in the southernmost part of Madhya Pradesh, in Southeast- Central India.??? Old genuine bronze items from this region are becoming increasingly rare and hard to find in India, as it was customary for tribes to melt old bronzes together in order to craft new ones. The quite juvenile and childish appearance of this tribal authenticity presents a special appeal to us!
