Jade. China, Western Han, 2nd century BC This squared plaque carved in openwork attested in the archaeolo gical finds of the Eastern Zhou and Han periods which were re presents a type of jades most likely not used as items of personal adornment but rather as decorative plaques inserted in some other objects. An exemplary case in this sense is offered by the headrest discovered in the famous tomb of the Prince Liu Sheng and his consort, Dou Wan, whose bodies were covered with a complete jade suit: the headrest was in gilt bronze and inlaid with jade plaques worked in openwork. The square profile of this plaque is another factor suggesting the jade was carved to be inserted in some other material or artefact which framed it. In fact, Chinese ornaments are never angular in profile and tend to have a rounded shape, even in the case of the openwork plaques nos. 22 and 23 which perhaps were not used as ornaments but as jade fittings. The plaque is carved with a design of two mythical animals, possibly two types of dragons, whose twisted bodies fill up the entire space of the plaque. Both of the animals’ heads, which differ sensibly from one another, are represented as seen from above, though their bodies twist in such a manner so as to appear in profile, a stylistic solution which is frequently seen on the jades made during the Eastern Zhou period. Both animals have an elongated crest which protrudes from the back of their heads: in the case of the dragon on the left, the crest takes on a flower-like shape and slightly overlaps the upper border of the frame; as does the front paw of the animal on the right, thus balancing the composition. On both sides, the composition is further enriched with two geometrizing motifs which do not seem to have any correspondence with the animals’ features. The jade is green in colour, though a great part of the stone has turned completely white due to natural alteration. The rendering of the two animals on this plaque is very similar to that seen on an ornament in shell and published in Salviati, The Language of Adornment, no. 51. Die Form ist ein Rechteck, innerhalb dessen Umrahmung sich gewundene Drachen befinden. An ihren K?rpern gez?hlt sind es zwei, an den Augen dagegen vier, da insgesamt vier Augenpaare ausgeführt sind (es gibt somit keine real dargestellte Rückseite der K?pfe). Von ihren H?uptern her sind die Drachen sehr unterschiedlich, sie sind Chilong, der eine hat runde Augen, breite Schnauze und Schlappohren, der andere ist exakt das Gegenteil davon - ein Fuchsgesicht mit scharf spitzen Ohren und ebensolcher Nase, die Augen geschwungene Schlitze. Die exaltierten Bewegungen ihrer K?rper sind zu einem raffiniert verteilten Dekorwerk gestaltet und füllen, teils sich sogar kreuzend, bis auf ein paar kleine Partien die gesamte Fl?che aus. Beachtlich sind die Schweife sowie die M?hnen. Das ?Fuchsgesicht“ hat einen ansehnlichen gro?en, der eine Volute bildet und ein Horn oder einen Haarschopf (es liegt irgendwo dazwischen), der den ganzen Kopf und Halsrücken hinabl?uft und dann in einer Volute endet. Der Schopf des anderen Drachen hat an seinem Ende - sehr merkwürdiger Weise - die pr?chtige Form einer franz?sischen Lilie, und sieht dabei sehr barock aus. Das ?Fuchsgesicht“ hat eine stolz gew?lbte Brust und steht mit seinen Beinen (die Drachen hier haben offenbar jeweils nur zwei) in den Rahmen hinein. Diese Jade bietet zur H?lfte eine kr?ftig gewachsene altersbedingte Verwitterung, die einen r?tlich angehauchten wei?en Farbton von elfenbeinartigem Aussehen hat. Im Durchlicht ist das Jadegrün von brillanter Sch?nheit, die verwitterte wei?e Partie dagegen rot bis gelbrot (was aber nur mittels fokussiertem Licht zu sehen ist). Dieses Schmuckamulett dürfte - die Qualit?t der Jade sowie der künstlerischen Arbeit betreffend - sehr ausgesucht gewesen sein. SIZE 4,4 x 6,8 CM, THICKNESS 3,5 MM
