Bronze. Tibet, 19th cent.
Bronze sculpture of Padmasambhava seated on a lotus pedestal. Padmasambhava (lit. the “lotus-born”), came to Tibet in the 8th century upon the invitation of the king, in order to subdue the demonic forces in the area. He wears a mitra on his head and holds a khatvanga (can be dismounted), here with three skulls at the top, and also the amrita vase, filled with the nectar of longevity, in one hand and a vajra in the other. An interesting sculpture, especially the grimaced face.
