Wood. Southern India, Tamilnadu, Tanjore District, 19th cent.
This very expressive three-dimensional carved relief presents a yaksha, while appearing as Shiva Vinyadhara (carrying a zither). As the yaksha are from Shivas entourage and accompany Kubera, there can be a connection to this big-bellied wealth deity. The ornately decorated round-bellied figure with beard and third eye (Shiva) and fluttering hair stands under a kirttimukha (lion mask). Includes mounting bracket.
