Netsuke, ivroy. Japan, 1st half of 19th cent.
Very good old work, from finest ivory and – although a detailed scene – well rounded and compact. An oni (devil) is creeping up a domed lotus leaf with realistically rendered stem and veins, for a small namazu (catfish) is located underneath. It is actually the “earthquake fish”, but the oni – who already has him on a hook – is presumably more interested in comsuming it. The small, lively depiction of the three-clawed demon with horns, loin cloth and grimaced face is amusing. Himotoshi and the signature EI-RAKU on the bottom.
