Wood. Southern India, Tamilnadu, Tanjore District, 19th cent.
Popular almost three-dimensional carved relief of a processional cart. It depicts four-armed Vishnu seated on a throne with his most essential attribute, the conch shankha, which he is holding in two of his arms. Vishnu used it as a weapon against demons, although it can also be connected to the fertility cult. The god wears a tall crown mukuta and sits in front of a flaming arch under a kirttimukha (lion mask).
