19th century, Japan. 1) The biwa is a Japanese short-necked fretted lute, often used in narrative storytelling. Size is 35" x 10". Structurally intact, two strings absent, good overall. 2) Raft depicting six scholars positioned on a mat while one reads from a scroll, the seventh figure, standing, poling the bamboo raft. No visible signature. Size is 7-1/2" x 3-1/4". Original undisturbed surface, very good. Condition: Dimensions: Largest : 35" x 12".
