Ira W. Hamilton (American, 19th/20th Century): Ships in Distress, 19th Century oil painting on academy board, signed. This dynamically composed painting depicts TWO ships in distress. The one closest to us has tattered sails, while another, barely seen through the fog, appears to be lodged on the rocks. In the sky above the back ship we can barely make out the tall mast and its upside-down American flag! (I hope you can see it in the photos-- it is SO faint!) The painting was created by American artist Ira W. Hamilton , who was active in new England in the latter 19th Century and early 20th Century. This is one of his masterpieces! The painting measures 6""x12"", and is in an ornate gold gesso frame which measures approx. 10"" x 16"" The painting has been recently cleaned and is luminous. The frame is in excellent condition.
