This rhythmic rendition of a country landscape was painted by Spanish artist Joaquin Tudela y Perales (1892-1970). It appears to be one of his early paintings, probably from his youth, around 1910.
The view is painted on unprimed canvas, in a masterfully direct manner. The paint is thick and buttery, holding impressions of the artist's brush. The marks are energetic and swirling with the influence of the Impressionist masters of the early 20th Century.
Joaquin Tudela y Perales had an outstanding artistic career, and was considered to be a Spanish artistic treasure. His works were in high demand, and are included in the national collections of Spain.
This painting, signed simply Tudela, appears to have been sold to a traveler shortly after being created, and transported to the USA where it was mounted onto stretcher modified to accommodate the European metric measurements.
The painting has been cleaned and lined onto a new canvas to strengthen it. A few minor scuffs were in-painted, and a light coat of non-yellowing varnish was added to protect the paint.
The canvas is on the original modified stretcher, which measures approx. 17.75"x15.75". The newer frame measures 20.5"x22.25"
