A MASSIVE (72 CM) PAINTED AND GESSOED CARVED WOOD FIGURE OF A TIGER, EDO PERIOD

Japan, Edo period (1615-1868)

Constructed in the warihagi zukuri technique, finely carved in two sections, the ferocious beast with slender, muscular body standing on its hindlegs, the mouth agape revealing tongue and teeth, the eyes painted and inlaid with glass, the fur intricately modeled and skillfully painted.

LENGTH 72 cm, HEIGHT 61 cm

Provenance: From a deceased estate in Sarasota, Florida, United States.
Condition: Good condition with expected wear, flaking and losses to gesso, few small chips to extremities. Presenting beautifully.
