A BUDDHIST PAINTING DEPICTING AMIDA NYORAI AMID CLOUDS, EARLY EDO PERIOD

Japan, 17th-18th century, early Edo period (1615-1868)

Ink, watercolors, gouache, and gold paint on paper. Mounted on silk brocade and set within a frame, behind glass. Depicting a colossal, golden bust of Amida Nyorai emerging from swirling clouds. His serene countenance is characterized by heavy-lidded, downcast eyes beneath gently arched eyebrows, centered with a prominent urna, a broad nose, and full lips framed by a thin mustache and goatee, all flanked by long, pendulous earlobes. The head surmounted by a domed ushnisha covered with tight, blue-painted curls, from which a ratna emerges at the front, and encircled by a large, radiant halo.

Inscriptions: To the right edge, inscribed 無量寿如来尊像 Muryojunyorai sonzo [Statue of Amida Buddha].

Provenance: Collection of Dr. Helmut Ploog, Munich, Germany, thence by descent. Dr. Helmut Ploog (1940-2024) was among the most influential and respected graphologists in the German-speaking world. Over the course of a distinguished career as an expert witness, educator, and author, he published a series of seminal works that are now regarded as standard references in the study of handwriting and character analysis. Beyond his professional achievements, Ploog cultivated a deep commitment to the arts. He assembled a notable collection of Asian art, including significant Chinese, Japanese and Thai works. He donated part of his collection, among them several important Khmer sculptures, to the Weltmuseum in Vienna.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Expected browning to paper, little soiling, scattered stains, flaking to pigment, creasing, folds, and small losses. The mounting with signs of wear, tiny losses, and creasing. The frame in excellent condition with minor wear.

Image SIZE 66 x 46.3 cm, SIZE incl. frame 104 x 64.5 cm

This iconographic representation of Amida corresponds to Buddha Amitabha, a central figure in Japanese Buddhism. Worship of Amida was established in Japan during the Nara period (710-794) and became one of the principal practices taught in the Tendai school during the Heian period (794-1185). Amida is revered as the one who welcomes the faithful into the celestial realm. Despite human imperfections, those who embrace Buddhist doctrine and invoke the name of Amida at the moment of death are believed to be reborn in the Pure Land Paradise.

This painting reflects the iconography known as “Amida Coming Over the Mountains.” It is one of several iconographies depicting the Buddha Amida hastening to the side of those on the verge of passing on, often depicted as descending from beyond a range of mountains (see Literature comparison below) or through a thicket of clouds. Instances of this motif can be traced to as early as the Kamakura period (1185-1333).
