拍品描述
A GILT AND POLYCHROME WOOD FIGURE OF KONGOYASHA MYO-O (VAJRAYAKSHA), MUROMACHI PERIOD

Japan, 16th century, Muromachi period (1333-1573)

Finely carved, the six-armed deity holding a vajra and bell of gilt-lacquered wood in his main hands and a sword, staff, and bow in his secondary hands, dressed in a billowing scarf and loose-fitting robes, his chest and head adorned with intricately pierced gilt-metal jewelry, the crown with triratna and dharmachakra, suspending numerous small beads.

His three faces each with menacing expression, boldly modeled and neatly painted, below the flaming hair, backed by a gilt-lacquered circular halo applied with metal flames. The guardian king stands atop a rockwork base supported on a gilt-lacquered lobed square plinth carved to the waist with shaped reserves enclosing rinzu diaper.

HEIGHT 31 cm

With an associated Japanese wood stand.

Provenance: From an old Japanese collection.
Condition: Very good condition with expected wear, minor flaking to lacquer mostly to base, few losses to attributes and the metal appliqués especially well preserved.

Kongoyasha Myo-o (Sanskrit: Vajrayana) is one of the Five Great Guardian Kings in Esoteric Buddhism. His ferocious aspect is a manifestation of the wrath of the Five Wisdom Buddhas against evil. Kongoyasha Myo-o is presented with three faces, five eyes, and six arms, with each hand holding one of his attributes: a wheel, an arrow, a bow, a sword, a tri-pronged vajra, and a vajra bell. Introduced from China by Kobo Daishi (774-836), a founder of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism, the Five Great Guardian Kings became an important ritual icon, called upon as protectors of the nation during the Ninnokyo ceremony (Sutra of the Benevolent Kings), which was performed on special occasions.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related, earlier, larger wood figure of Kongoyasha Myo-o, dated to the Heian period, in the Toji Temple in Kyoto.

Auction comparison:
Compare a related polychrome wood figure of a standing Fudo Myo-o, dated to the Muromachi period, 16th century, 35 cm high, at Christie’s, 22 September 2004, New York, lot 229 (sold for USD 7,767 or approx. EUR 11,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
