Kaga style armor represents one of the most refined regional expressions of Japanese armorial craftsmanship, flourishing under the patronage of the Maeda clan in Kaga Province during the Edo period, and is distinguished in particular by its fine purple lacing, a feature associated with both aesthetic sophistication and high status. Renowned for its exceptional lacquerwork and meticulous construction, this style also frequently incorporates decorative metalwork applied directly to the cuirass, where intricate overlays or inlays, often complemented by gilt fittings, enhance both visual richness and structural strength. The harmonious integration of lacquer, textile lacing, and refined metal elements reflects the advanced technical skill of Kaga artisans, and in examples such as the present lot, the combination of purple lacing with applied metal decoration underscores the elegance, prestige, and cultivated taste that define this distinguished armor tradition.
