AN OKEGAWA NIMAI-DO GUSOKU (TWO-PIECE CUIRASS ARMOR)

Japan, 18th-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The predominantly lacquered components laced in blue, mounted on silk brocade, and fitted with kanamono with kiku (chrysanthemum), sakura (cherry-blossom), and Yuki-wa ni mitsumatsu [Three pines with hexagonal snowflake flower] design, as well as the maru ni kuginuki mon.

The armor comprises:
Kabuto (helmet): A brown-lacquered eighteen-plate iron bowl with raised ridges, topped by a four-stage gilt-metal tehen kanamono issuing shinodare to the front, the mabisashi of typical form, below the large circular gilt-wood maedate with an inscription, flanked by gently upturned fukigaeshi, all above the five-lame jikoro with kiku studs to the top.

Menpo (Mask): A lacquered iron menpo with a removable nose plate secured by turning pins, cast with flared nostrils and an open mouth with red-lacquered lips, revealing a full set of gilt-lacquered teeth, designed with deeply embossed wrinkles, the chin with ase-nagashi, and the cheeks with bent anchoring posts, all fitted with a five-lame iron yodarekake with gilt rims.

Do (Chest Plate): A lacquered nimai do studded with flat gilt x-form studs, with seven sections of four-lame kusazuri, the lowest trimmed with horse hair, the back fitted with uke-zutsu (sashimono pole holder). The iron watagami (shoulder straps) with maru ni kuginuki mon.

Sode (Shoulder Guard): A pair of lacquered five-lame sode.

Haidate (Thigh Guard): A pair of iron and kusari (chain mail) haidate on blue and gold brocade.

Kote (Armored Sleeves) and Tekko (Gauntlets): A pair of iron and kusari (chain mail) kote and tekko which are fitted with kanamono with sakura (cherry-blossom) and Yuki-wa ni mitsumatsu [Three pines with hexagonal snowflake flower] design.

Provenance: Ex-collection Frank Bell, Cologne, Germany. The private collection of Dr Werner Zintl, Worms, Germany, acquired for EUR 9,100 in 2000 at Christie’s London (according to collection card).
Condition: Good condition with wear, soiling, and corrosion. The lacquer with age cracks, small losses, and flaking. The maedate with repairs and age cracks to the verso.

With a wood storage box (yoroibako), armor stand, and surcoat (jinboari) with the kuginuki mon within an ougi (folding fan) to the back.
