? MYOCHIN MUNEMASA: AN OKEGAWA NIMAI-DO (TWO-PIECE CUIRASS ARMOR) AND AN IRON NAMBAN KABUTO

The kote by Myochin Munemasa, signed Kashu ju, Munemasa saku
Japan, Kaga, late Edo period (1615-1868)

The lacquered components predominantly laced in blue, mounted on fine blue silk, and fitted with kanamono with chrysanthemum (kiku), swirling blades, and five and four petal inome (boar’s eye) design.

The armor comprises:
Kabuto (Helmet): A hachi composed of six vertical plates with raised edges overlaid with pierced iron plates secured with kiku-bosses, at the top a six-petal geometric flower terminating in a knop-form finial, the brow plate cusped over the eyes with applied eyebrows and hinged cheek flaps, all above the five-lame jikoro.

Hanbo (Cheek guard): A lacquered cheek guard pierced to the chin with an ase-nagashi, flanked by cord pegs, all fitted with a four-lame yodarekake with blue lacing.

Do (Chest Plate): A nimai do with an iron base and orange-lacquered lame, adorned to the center with a large metal alloy mitsudomoe mon, seven sections of five-lame kusazuri, the lowest painted with scrolling dragons and pierced with inome (boar's eyes), the front and the back with one large agemaki-no-kan, and fitted with reticulated shakudo plates bearing chrysanthemum bosses against scrolling vines. The iron watagami (shoulder straps) with coiled dragons in silver, enclosed within a plain circular medallion. The edges of the do with foliate-incised shakudo fukurin.

Haidate (Thigh Guard): A pair of silver-lacquered haidate adorned with large circular emblems in rust-brown.

Kote (Armored Sleeves) and Tekko (Gauntlets): A pair of iron and kusari (chain mail) kote and tekko which are fitted with kanamono with chrysanthemum (kiku), swirling blades, and five and four petal inome (boar’s eye) design. The top of the arms of the kote inscribed 加州住 Kashu ju and 宗将作 MUNEMASA saku [Made by Munemasa, resident of Kaga Province].

Suneate (Shin Guards): A pair of iron and kusari (chain mail) suneate.

Condition: Good condition with wear, soiling, and corrosion to iron. The lacquer with flaking, age cracks, and few losses. Expected losses to silver inlays. The fabric with small losses and tears.

With an armor stand and wood storage box (yoroibako) with metal fittings.

Compare a closely related Namban kabuto, dated to the 17th century, at Bonhams, Fine Japanese Art, 6 November 2012, London, lot 298 (sold for GBP 31,250 or approx. EUR 52,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
