A LARGE (90 CM) AND IMPRESSIVE GILT AND POLYCHROME WOOD FIGURE OF UGA BENZAITEN, 16TH CENTURY

Japan, 16th century, Muromachi period (1333-1573)

Finely carved and richly decorated with polychrome pigments, gesso, and gilt-lacquer, the eight-armed deity seated cross-legged on a wide oval lotus throne seated cross-legged and holding a wish-fulfilling jewel (hoju) in one hand, wearing layered patterned robes, the serene face with glass-inlaid eyes and red bow-shaped lips, the hair pulled up into a double topknot behind the elaborate openworked gilt-bronze crown with mirror glass inlays, phoenixes, and a torii gate, backed by a large circular halo with three jewels.

HEIGHT 46 cm (the figure), 90 cm (total)

Provenance: From an old private collection in Belgium, acquired around thirty years ago.
Condition: Very good condition with expected wear, minor age cracks, flaking and minor losses to pigments, little rubbing to lacquer, losses to attributes and snake head, the gilt-bronze appliqués exceptionally well preserved.

Benzaiten, originally derived from the Hindu goddess Sarasvati, was introduced to Japan via China in the 7th–8th century. By the late 11th or early 12th century, she became integrated into Japan’s indigenous belief system and merged with Ugajin, a serpent deity associated with water, agriculture, and good fortune. While Ugajin alone is typically depicted as a human-headed snake, the syncretic form of Uga Benzaiten appears in esoteric Buddhist art as an eight-armed goddess, often distinguished by the inclusion of a torii gate in her headdress, as seen in the present example.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related statue of Benzaiten, shown to the public only once every 60 years, in the main worship hall of Hongonji on Chikubu Island, Lake Biwa, donated by the second lord of the Azai clan, Azai Hisamasa, and his mother in 1556.

Auction comparison:
Compare a related figure of Jizo Bosatsu, 134.6 cm tall (including the base), dated 17th century, at Christie’s, Japanese and Korean Art, 17 March 2009, New York, lot 18 (sold for USD 28,750 or approx. EUR 38,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
