AN IMPRESSIVE SET OF EIGHT SATSUMA CERAMIC DISHES, AFTER KITAGAWA UTAMARO’S ‘JOFU KAISEKI TEWAZA KUSA’ (WOMEN’S WORK IN SILK CULTURE)

By the Koshida workshop, signed Koshida
Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Each finely potted with shallow, gently rounded sides supported on a short, subtly tapered foot. The interiors are richly decorated in vivid enamels with extensive gilding, each dish illustrating a stage in the traditional silk-production process, depicted through elegantly attired women engaged in various tasks. The figures are rendered with fine detail, wearing elaborately patterned garments that reflect the refined aesthetic of late Edo-period ukiyo-e.

The present set comprises eight scenes from the twelve compositions of Kitagawa Utamaro’s celebrated series Jofu kaiseki tewaza kusa (also known as Fujin tewaza gusa or “Women’s Work in Silk Culture”), illustrating the successive stages of silk production. The selected scenes include the first six and the final two, arranged in their intended narrative sequence:

1. A woman brushes silkworm eggs into a hatching tray, initiating the cycle of sericulture.
2. Women gather mulberry leaves, the essential nourishment for the larvae.
3. Leaves are prepared and distributed to the growing silkworms.
4. The silkworms are tended following a feeding stage, signaling the approach of transformation.
5. The “Great Awakening,” when the worms rapidly increase in size and appetite.
6. Mature silkworms spin cocoons, later collected after several days.
11. & 12. A continuous composition depicting silk reeling and weaving, with a loom spanning both scenes, uniting the processes of thread production and textile manufacture.

DIAMETER 18.5 cm (each)

Condition: Very good condition with minor surface wear and firing-related irregularities. Minimal traces of handling and use, including a small chip to the underside of the dish depicting the third scene and a restored chip to the rim of the dish depicting the eleventh scene, neither detracting from the quality of the decoration.

Koshida was a prolific producer of high-quality Satsuma ware, active from circa 1880 to 1927, and is noted for employing some of the most accomplished painters of the period to execute the intricate decoration of its pieces. The manufactory ceased operations around the same time as the more renowned Kinkozan workshop, before resuming production after 1945.
