NAMIKAWA YASUYUKI: A SUPERB CLOISONNé ENAMEL TEAPOT AND COVER

Attributed to Namikawa Yasuyuki (1845-1927), unsigned
Japan, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)

The superbly crafted teapot features a flattened cylindrical body with sharply sloping hips that taper toward a flat base, supported on three small cylindrical feet. Rising to high-angled shoulders, it leads to a broad, circular mouth, fitted with a slightly domed cover topped by a kiku-shaped finial. The teapot is equipped with a straight, gently upright spout and an overhanging handle, mounted with silver chrysanthemum-shaped hinges.

The exterior is meticulously decorated with vibrant enamels outlined in shimmering gilt wire, showcasing a profusion of ornamental motifs. The sides display shaped panels with mythical birds amidst a hanabishi (flower-lozenge) pattern, while the underside features chrysanthemums above meandering waters. The shoulders are adorned with reishi fungus, interspersed with additional avian creatures and floral designs. The cover and handle are similarly richly decorated with floral motifs.

Namikawa Yasuyuki (1845-1927) is widely regarded as one of Japan’s foremost cloisonné artists. After founding his independent workshop, he became renowned for his groundbreaking technical innovations, most notably the creation of the first transparent black glaze, developed in collaboration with German scientist Gottfried Wagener. This innovation marked a significant advancement in the evolution of transparent enamels. Yasuyuki also refined the use of fine wirework to an exceptional degree, achieving unparalleled precision. Over time, his style evolved from purely ornamental designs to more naturalistic and pictorial compositions. The present example is a fine representation of his early body of work.

Namikawa received significant international recognition, earning numerous awards at world expositions, including the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition and the Paris Expositions Universelles in 1878 and 1889. He accumulated 31 prizes at National Industrial Expositions in Japan and was appointed Imperial Household Artist in 1896, a distinction shared only with Namikawa Sosuke (1847-1910).
