By Yabu Meizan (1853-1934), signed Yabu Meizan
Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Finely potted, the elegant pear-shaped body rises from a short, spreading foot to a slender neck with a slightly flared mouth. The exterior is delicately decorated in gilt and bright enamels, depicting luxuriant maple branches in the midst of their seasonal transformation. The leaves are rendered with remarkable subtlety, transitioning from fresh greens and soft yellows to vibrant shades of crimson and deep red, capturing the fleeting beauty of autumn. The surface is covered overall with a finely crackled transparent glaze. The recessed base signed in gold script within a square reserve YABU MEIZAN.

Renowned for his exceptionally fine brushwork and meticulous attention to detail, he specialized in delicately painted compositions that often featured landscapes, seasonal motifs, and genre scenes. His workshop produced high-quality wares for both domestic appreciation and export, and he actively promoted his work internationally, participating in world expositions and contributing to the global success of Japanese ceramics during the height of Japonisme.
