拍品描述
KINKOZAN: A SUPERB AND LARGE SATSUMA CERAMIC KORO (INCENSE BURNER)

By the Kinkozan company, signed Kinkozan zo
Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Finely potted, the four-lobed, bulbous body is raised on four oval feet and rises to high, rounded shoulders and a broad circular mouth. The exterior is richly decorated in vibrant overglaze enamels with extensive gilding, arranged in four lobed panels enclosing finely rendered naturalistic scenes. These include a rooster and hen among dense bamboo stalks, sparrows perched on trailing wisteria, a group of three geese amid blossoming camellias, and further sparrows fluttering among peonies in full bloom, each composition executed with delicate brushwork and lively detail.

The panels are set against a dense field of stylized gilt flowerheads on a deep gozu-blue ground, creating a striking contrast that enhances the brilliance of the decoration. This richly ornamented scheme continues onto the slightly domed cover, which is finely pierced and surmounted by a sculptural leafy chrysanthemum branch finial. The underside is signed in gilt within a square reserve KINKOZAN zo [made by Kinkozan].

HEIGHT 18.3 cm (incl. cover), DIAMETER 16.8 cm

Condition: Excellent condition with no visible damages or signs of restoration (checked under UV light). Only very minor surface wear.

The Kinkozan company was among the most successful producers of so-called Kyo-Satsuma (Kyoto Satsuma) wares. Like their counterparts in Osaka, Yokohama, and Tokyo, Kinkozan’s production reflects Kyoto’s response to strong Western demand for finely painted Japanese ceramics during the Meiji period. Following the international exposure of Japanese art at the Paris Exposition of 1867, the rise of Japonisme in Europe led to a significant increase in exports, with Kinkozan wares admired for their delicate brushwork, refined compositions, and harmonious use of color and gold.

Auction comparison:
Compare a closely related four-lobed squat Satsuma incense burner (koro) and cover, decorated with various bird-and-flower scenes, by Kinkozan, Meiji period, 15.2 cm high, at Bonhams, Fine Japanese Art, London, 11 May 2017, lot 223 (sold for GBP 6,250 or approx. EUR 9,800 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
